- Step 1 – Complete and return your application form, along with one passport-size photograph and a non-refundable deposit of £100. We ask for a non-refundable deposit because processing applications incurs a cost and we believe these costs should be covered by you the applicant, rather than Smile International, so that we do not divert funds away from those we are seeking to help. You may pay by cheque, credit or debit card. Cheques should be made out to Smile International. Please note that credit cards incur a 2% additional cost, which you will need to add to the deposit.
- Step 2 – Contact your referees. Please distribute the reference forms to your referees and ask them to return them to us in good time. Reference forms must be returned to us before we can proceed with your application. You will need to ask your pastor or church leader to complete one of the reference forms. A work supervisor, tutor, or someone who has known you for at least two years needs to complete the other reference form. Referees must be 18 years or over. Please note referees must not be members of your immediate or distant family. References are not required if you have been on a Smile International Step Out trip in the preceding 12 months prior to the departure date of your current trip.
- Step 3 – Attend an orientation meeting. Trip orientations are compulsory as they enable you to meet and get to know your fellow team members, provide you with information on where you will be going and what you will be doing, cultural awareness, health, safety and security and give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Acceptance for all trips is subject to satisfactory references, InterHealth clearance and a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) disclosure.
Once you have been accepted, you will be given a trip information pack which provides lots of information regarding your forthcoming trip.
Please note that in some countries the trip may prove difficult because of long flights, disruptive time-zone changes, poor conditions and extreme weather. Also there may be some lengthy walking, rides on bumpy roads and long days. You need to ensure that you are physically fit enough to cope with Smile International trips.
